* : Complex metal hydrides for hydrogen storage application : NMR studies

* ʷ :

Complex metal hydrides have been intensively studied because of their potential applicability as materials for on-board reversible hydrogen storage systems in the automobile industry. The high hydrogen capacities of light metal based hydrides once fascinated researchers into considerable investigation worldwide in recent years. However, the R&D activities have diminished to large extent due to a number of reasons such as their fundamental limitation in reaction kinetics. The magic catalyst has not been discovered yet, and the search continues with much of diversified approaches including the nano-scale manipulations. In the seminar, the various material based storage approaches will be briefly overviewed, and the R&D efforts on reversible hydrogen storage systems based on complex metal hydrides will be presented. NMR characterizations of complex metal hydrides under investigation, in particular, will be mainly discussed. Structure changes during hydrogenation/dehydrogenation chemical reactions of many hydrides, especially metal borohydrides, are complex and challenging to study since intermediates and end products often form in amorphous phases. Due to high accessibility in probing local chemical bonds and geometries, NMR methods have made key contributions in the reaction studies. Several examples from our recent investigations will be presented for the illustration.
